Modern World Studies
Modern World Studies Overview
PURPOSE: This course in modern world history will allow you to explore the political, economic, and social themes of different countries from World War One to the Modern DayRATIONALE: Contrary to popular belief, history is far from simply the boring and meaningless memorization of facts and dates that many associate with it. The study of history should be something that is taken seriously in today’s world, as it is the key to understanding where we were, where we are, and where we are going. You will quickly discover that there are many world leaders throughout history, and still today, who have not studied or learned from history and are therefore destined (or doomed) to repeat it. In this course, we will be focusing on the broad, conceptual themes of modern world history and developing those themes, rather than just the facts and dates, which will rather serve to make those ideas clear to us (think forest not trees). How does technology produce change in a society? When is violence justified? Does the individual make history or does history make the individual? These are just some of the many such questions we will explore this year and in doing so, you will be strengthening your skills of gathering, examining, analyzing, and interpreting historical data. You will also be studying patterns and trends and looking at the struggles and accomplishments of various groups of people. All of the men and women who have shaped the course of history have left an impression upon it, and it is now our job, as students of history, to make sense of all they have left behind.
Throughout the year, you will be given opportunities to sharpen your critical thinking skills by interpreting writings that involve comparison and contrast, cause and effect, and analysis and synthesis. One way that these skills can be sharpened is by studying various primary sources. These sources are vital to the study and understanding of history, as they show us that it is not made up, but in fact was seen and experienced first-hand by these both famous and ordinary eyewitnesses to history.
